Great exploits begin with one heart, one soul, one idea and one connection. And that’s exactly what happened to the Kibirichia Girls Secondary School when the Old girls visited their former school for the first time in years. Kibirichia Girls, located in Kiambogo location, off Meru-Nanyuki road, Meru County, was started in 1974 as a Harambee School. Since then it has proudly nurtured and educated great women over the years. Currently, it has a student population of 650 students.,29 teachers, and 22 support staff.
When Dr. Winfred Kithinji was invited for the launch of the Association of Alumni Communities in Kenya here in Nairobi on 29th May 2017, she never knew it would be the beginning of a beautiful but tough journey, of reaching out to other girls and finally visiting her former school. She sat, listened, interacted with other Alumni leaders and left with a resolve to make it happen for her former School.
Starting March 2018, Winnie rallied 234 old girls of the years; 1984-1987, 2008-2011, to go back to their former school and mentor students. Out of 234 girls, she was able to connect with (Both in Kenya and Diaspora), 21 girls were able to go back on 9th June this year.
Adorning beautiful red T-shirts branded with the school’s name and their rightful intentions, they toured the school, remembering the old times and marveling at all the changes that had occurred over the years. They planted trees while beautiful moments filled with laughter and joy. They shared snacks with the students and had conversations on discipline, and school work.As a result of this initiative, individual Alumni have decided to sponsor students, to serve as Board of Governors as well as support each other.
The event was widely covered and featured by various media houses including; Meru TV, Meru FM, K24, and KTN. Meru TV strongly featured as a call to action for other schools in Meru to emulate Kibirichia Girls and give back to their former schools.
The alumni groups plan includes; holding an annual alumni day, mentoring girls on career goals, and engaging in and supporting school projects as alumni. They also plan to register the old girl’s association for more opportunities.
